Songs, die bleiben
Songtexte
The Rose (Amanda McBroom)
Niemand kennt Amanda McBroom - doch alle kennen
The rose
Some say love it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
and you its only seed
It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taking
who cannot seem to give
and the soul afraid of dyin'
that never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose
How “The rose” came to be
People often ask me what inspired me to write The Rose. Here is the story: I was driving down the freeway one afternoon, some time in 1977, and a song came on the radio. It was “Magdalena” by Danny O’Keefe, sung by Leo Sayer. I liked it immediately. My favorite line was “Your love is like a razor. My heart is just a scar.”
I thought: ”Ooh, I love that lyric.”
As I continued to drive down the road the thought came, I don’t agree with the sentiment. I don’t think love is like a razor. (I was younger then.) What, then, do I think love is? Suddenly, it was as if someone had opened a window in the top of my head. Words came pouring in. I had to keep reciting them to myself as I drove faster and faster towards home, so I wouldn’t forget them. I screeched into my drive way, ran into the house, past various bewildered dogs and cats and husbands, and sat down at the piano. Ten minutes later, 'The rose' was there.
I called my husband, George, into the room and played it for him, as I always did with my new songs. He listened, and quietly said to me, “You’ve just written a standard.” I protested that no one but my pals would ever hear it. (This is long before I had ever recorded anything.)
He said:”Mark my words, something is going to happen with this song.”
A year or so later, a young songwriter named Michele Brourman, who became my primary musical collaborator and best friend, said "Listen. There is this movie coming out called “The Rose”. They are looking for a title tune. Do you want me to submit this to them?” I had never really tried to submit this song to anyone. I didn’t consider myself a song writer at the time. So I said, “Sure.”
He submitted the tune to the producers, who hated it. They thought it was dull and a hymn and not rock and roll and totally wrong. They put it in the reject box. But the divine Paul Rothchild, who was the music supervisor on the film, asked them to reconsider. They again said no. So he mailed it to Bette Midler. She liked it, and that’s how it got into the film and changed my life forever.
I have never written another song as quickly. I like to think I was the window that happened to be open when those thoughts needed to come through. I am eternally grateful... to the Universe for speaking to me in the first place and for showing me what I truly believe.

Aus der Einsamkeit eines Hotelzimmers
Birds of paradise
Chrissie Hynde "The Pretenders"
I wrote a letter to you my friend
So many letters that I never send
I think about you at the day's end
The time that we had
I laughed in my bed
The stupid things you said
We were two birds of paradise
When I was a little girl
With clay horses and lambs on the shelf
I caught frogs in ditches, listened for elves
My friends and I had a world unto ourselves
No grownups could find us when we
Made our plans so secretly
To run away and fly to be
With the two birds of paradise
Now once upon a time my mind still there wanders
Back in the room the things I remember
One time when we took off our clothes
But you were cryin', cryin'
You said nothing lasts forever
We were happy together
I thought about you in Stockholm and Rome
Me in my hotel room
You in your home
This is the life they say that
Dreams are made of
Don't forget
Please do forgive me
I still have something you did give me
Come into my dream with me and dream
Oh dream of paradise

Talking of the end
The Incredible String Band
talking of the end
let me hear you say you disagree
talking of the end
talking of the end
let me hear you say it will not be
this is no time for easy riding
this is no time to cry
better start to play your part
start to live before you start to die
dream the world all alive
busily conspiring humming like a hive
dream the world all alive
I dream it as me
rise as fair and tender leaves
brightening in countless eyes
and the sweet song of whales
beneath the sea
if I could sing only one song I'd sing of you
Wie die meisten Songs der ISB ist auch "Talking of the end" vollendet in Melodie und Text. Nie vergesse ich diese zwei Sätze:
-
Start to live before you start to die
-
If I could sing only one song, I'd sing of you

So einfach kann ein Liebeslied sein
Thank You
Led Zeppelin
If the sun refused to shine
I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea
there would still be you and me.
Kind woman, I give you my all
Kind woman, nothing more.
Little drops of rain whisper of the pain
tears of loves lost in the days gone by.
Our love is strong, here there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die.
Inspiration's what you are to me,
inspiration, look... see.
And so today, my world it smiles
your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
Thanks to you it will be done,
for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad,
happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine
I would still be loving you.
If the mountains should crumble to the sea
there would still be you and me.
zum AnfangThe Hedgehog's Song (The Incredible String Band)
Ein kleiner Igel weiss es besser
The Hedgehog's Song
The Incredible String Band
I'm not the kind to complain
That I never had a girl to love.
Many a fine girl I tried hard to know,
But I think I never tried enough.
Sitting one day by myself,
And I'm thinking, "What could be wrong?"
When this funny little Hedgehog comes running up to me,
And it starts up to sing me this song.
Oh, you know all the words, and you sung all the notes,
But you never quite learned the song, she sang.
I can tell by the sadness in your eyes,
That you never quite learned the song.
Every day when the sun go down,
And the evening is so very still,
Many a fine girl I've held in my arms,
And I hope there's many more that I will,
But just when everything is going fine,
And absolutely nothing is wrong,
This funny little Hedgehog's always around
And every time he wants to sing me this song.
Oh, you know all the words, and you sung all the notes,
But you never quite learned the song, she sang.
I can tell by the sadness in your eyes,
That you never quite learned the song.
One day when the moon was full I thought I might settle down,
Found myself a pretty little girl,
And I stopped all my running around;
But just when the preacher come along,
And he's just gonna pop on the ring,
This funny little Hedgehog comes
running down the aisle,
And I don't have to tell you what he did sing.
Oh, you know all the words, and you sung all the notes,
But you never quite learned the song, she sang.
I can tell by the sadness in your eyes,
That you never quite learned the song.
"Du kennst die Noten, aber das Lied kennst du nicht", sagt der kleine Igel. Und er sagt es uns immer wieder, bis wir es vielleicht ein wenig begreifen.

You know what you could be (The Incredible String Band)
Was du sein könntest...
You know what you could be
The Incredible String Band
Read your book and lose yourself
In another's thoughts.
He might tell you 'bout what is
Or even 'bout what is not.
And if he's kind and gentle too,
And he loves the world a lot,
His twilight words may melt the slush
Of what you have been taught.
You know what you could be.
Tell me my friend,
Why you worry all the time
What you should be.
Listen to the song of life.
Its rainbow's end won't hold you.
Its crimson shapes and purple sounds,
Softly will enfold you.
It gurgles through the timeless glade,
In quartertones of lightning.
No policy is up for sale,
In case the truth be frightening.
You know what you could be.
Tell me my friend,
Why you worry all the time
What you should be.
Du weisst, was du sein könntest. Sag' mir mein Freund: Warum bist du immer damit beschäftigt, was du sein solltest?

First girl I loved (The Incredible String Band)
Ein Abschiedslied
First girl I loved
The Incredible String Band
First girl I loved,
Time has come I will sing you
this sad goodbye song,
When I was seventeen, I used to know you.
Well, I haven't seen you, now, since many is the short year,
And the last time I saw you, you said you'd joined the Church of Jesus.
But me, I remember your long red hair falling in our faces
As I kissed you.
Well, I want you to know, I just had to go
I want you to know, we just had to grow.
And you're probably married now, house and car and all,
And you turned into a grownup, female, stranger.
And if I was lying near you now,
I probably wouldn't be here at all.
Well, we parted so hard;
Me, rushing round Britain with a guitar,
Making love to people
That I didn't even like to see.
Well, I would think of you.
Yes, I mean in the six sad morning.
And in the lonely midnight,
Try to hold your face before me.
Well, I want you to know, I just had to go;
I want you to know, we just had to grow.
And you're probably married now, kids and all,
And you turned into a grownup female stranger.
And if I was lying near you now,
I'd just have to fall.
Well, I never slept with you
Though we must have made love a thousand times.
For we were just young, didn't have no place to go,
But in the wide hills and beside many a long water
You have gathered flowers, and they do not smell for me.
Well, I want you to know, I just had to go.
I want you to know, we just had to grow.
So it's goodbye first love, and I hope you're fine.
Well, I have a sweet woman
Maybe some day to have babies by me,
she's pretty,
Is a true friend of mine

Love that burns (Fleetwood Mac)
Wenn ein Mann zu sehr liebt
Love that burns
Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac
Would you love me tomorrow
Like you say you love me now
Would you love me, would you love me tomorrow
Like you say you love me now
When the flames of our flesh have stopped burning
And the fire of our love has cooled down
Too many times I've given too much
Baby, give your love to me in return
Too many times I've given too much
Baby, give your love in return
Give me your mind and your heart
But please don't leave me with a love that burns
And don't use me as your fool
'Cause my heart can't stand another lie
Please don't use me, don't use me as your fool
Baby, 'cause my heart can't stand another lie
And if you can't love me tomorrow
Please leave me now in my room to cry

Born to be gone
Mike Heron
I remember the night when my dog died
I was sitting just smiling by his side
When my Daddy came in
He could see I was grinning
He thought I was a cruel and a cold
Six year old
Oh pack up your bone
It’s time to roll on
I know you wouldn’t want no sad song
Though I’ll be lonely as anything
There’s no good that tears could bring
I’ve known all along
That you were born to be gone
You sure had somewhere to go to
Sure had a reason to run
But we had some fun together
Under the sun
Oh pack up your bone
It’s time to roll on...

Das Lied "Born to be gone" stammt von Mike Herons zweitem Soloalbum.

Norwegian Wood (The Beatles)
Eine Liebesnacht...
Norwegian Wood
The Beatles
I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me...
She showed me her room, isn't it good, norwegian wood?
She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere,
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair.
I sat on a rug, biding my time, drinking her wine,
We talked until two and then she said, "It's time for bed"
She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh.
I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath
And when I awoke, I was alone, this bird had flown
So I lit a fire, isn't it good, norwegian wood.

Waterloo Sunset

Dirty old river, must you keep rolling
Flowing into the night
People so busy, makes me feel dizzy
Taxi light shines so bright
But I dont need no friends
As long as I gaze on waterloo sunset
I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunset's fine
Terry meets Julie, Waterloo Station
Every friday night
But I am so lazy, dont want to wander
I stay at home at night
But I dont feel afraid
As long as I gaze on waterloo sunset
I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunset's fine
Millions of people swarming like flies round waterloo underground
But Terry and Julie cross over the river
Where they feel safe and sound
And the dont need no friends
As long as they gaze on waterloo sunset
They are in paradise
Waterloo sunset's fine

zum AnfangShe's Leaving Home (The Beatles)
She's Leaving Home
The Beatles
Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more
She goes downstairs to the kitchen clutching her handkerchief
Quietly turning the backdoor key
Stepping outside she is free.
She...
We gave her most of our lives
is leaving...
Sacrificed most of our lives
home...
We gave her everything money could buy
She's leaving home after living alone
For so many years. Bye, bye
Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing gown
Picks up the letter that's lying there
Standing alone at the top of the stairs
She breaks down and cries to her husband Daddy our baby's gone
Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly
How could she do this to me.
She...
We never thought of ourselves
is leaving...
Never a thought for ourselves
home...
We struggled hard all our lives to get by
She's leaving home after living alone
For so many years. Bye, bye
Friday morning at nine o'clock she is far away
Waiting to keep the appointment she made
Meeting a man from the motor trade.
She...
What did we do that was wrong
is having...
We didn't know it was wrong
fun...
Fun is the one thing that money can't buy
Something inside that was always denied
For so many years. Bye, bye
She's leaving home. Bye, bye
1966 komponiert von John Lennon & Paul McCartney. Aus der LP "Sgt. Peppers".

Plastic Man
The Kinks
A man lives at the corner of the street,
And his neighbours think he's helpful and he's sweet,
'Cause he never swears and he always shakes you by the hand,
But no one knows he really is a plastic man.
He's got plastic heart, plastic feet and toes,
He's got plastic knees and a perfect plastic nose.
He's got plastic lips that hide his plastic teeth and gums,
And plastic legs that reach up to his plastic bum.
Plastic man got no brain,
Plastic man don't feel no pain,
Plastic people look the same,
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kick his shin or tread on his face,
Pull his nose all over the place,
He can't disfigure, or disgrace,
Plastic man.
He's got plastic flowers growing up the walls,
He eats plastic food with a plastic knife and fork,
He likes plastic cups and saucers 'cause they never break,
And he likes to lick his gravy off a plastic plate.
Plastic man got no brain,
Plastic man don't feel no pain,
Plastic people look the same,
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Kick his shin or tread on his face,
Pull his nose all over the place,
He can't disfigure, or disgrace,
Plastic man.
He's got a plastic wife who wears a plastic mac,
And his children wanna be plastic like their dad,
He's got a phony smile that makes you think he understands,
But no one ever gets the truth from plastic man.

Hey Jude (The Beatles)
Zeig ihr, wer du bist, mein Freund!
Hey Jude
The Beatles
Hey Jude don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
Hey Jude don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better
And any time you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Hey Jude don't let me down
You have found her now go and get her
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
So let it out and let it in
Hey Jude begin
You're waiting for someone to perform with
And don't you know that it's just you
Hey Jude you'll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder
Hey Jude don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you'll begin to make it better

When You Were a Child
The Kinks
We are born to this fantasy
Can't believe what they've done to you
Hard to see all these years go round
Taught to hide all that's true inside
What was it like
When you were a child?
Did you see the world
In a different light?
When the veil came down
Our destiny grew away from us
Don't it make you weep?
Can't you see?
I believe that we were
meant for each other
We'll get along somehow
If they leave us alone
Why don't they let us be
Just what we want to be
Don't it make you weep, can't you see?
I can't believe what they've done to you
They've got you just where they wanted you
When we sleep, dream each other's dreams
Casting memories on a sea of hope
Remember life as a child could be
Bring it back for all of us to see
What was it like
When you were a child?
How did it feel?
Did your mother treat you kind?
Mend those broken toys?
For in your heart there's innocence
Waiting to be free, can't you see?

The Night Before

We said our goodbyes, ah, the night before.
Love was in your eyes, ah, the night before.
Now today I find you have changed your mind.
Treat me like you did the night before.
Were you telling lies, ah, the night before?
Was I so unwise, ah, the night before?
When I held you near you were so sincere.
Treat me like you did the night before.
Last night is a night I will remember you by.
When I think of things we did it makes me wanna cry.
We said our goodbye, ah, the night before.

Ein Lied übers Altwerden
Shangri-La
The Kinks
Now that you’ve found your paradise
This is your kingdom to command
You can go outside and polish your car
Or sit by the fire in your Shangri-la
Here’s your reward for working so hard
Gone are the lavatories in the back yard
Gone are the days when you dreamed of that car
You just want to sit in your Shangri-la
Put on your slippers and sit by the fire
You’ve reached your top and you just can’t get any higher
You’re in your place and you know where you are
In your Shangri-la
Sit back in your old rocking chair
You need not worry, you need not care
You can’t go anywhere
Shangri-la, shangri-la, shangri-la
The little man who gets the train
Got a mortgage* hanging over his head
But he’s too scared to complain
‘cos he’s conditioned that way
Time goes by and he pays off his debts
Got a TV set and a radio
For seven shillings a week
Shangri-la, shangri-la, shangri-la…
And all the houses in the street have got a name
‘cos all the houses in the street they look the same
Same chimney pots, same little cars, same window panes
The neighbours call to tell you things that you should know
They say their lines, they drink their tea, and then they go
They tell your business in another Shangri-la
The gas bills and the water rates, and payments on the car
Too scared to think about how insecure you are
Life ain’t so happy in your little Shangri-la
Put on your slippers and sit by the fire
You’ve reached your top and you just can’t get any higher
You’re in your place and you know where you are
In your Shangri-la
Sit back in your old rocking chair
You need not worry, you need not care
You can’t go anywhere
Shangri-la, shangri-la, shangri-la…

Need Your Love so Bad (Fleetwood Mac)
Need Your Love so Bad
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
Need someone's hand to lead me through the night
I need someone's arms to hold and squeeze me tight
Now, when the night begins
I'm at an end
Because I need your love so bad
I need some lips to feel next to mine
Need someone to stand up - to stand up and tell me when I'm lyin'
And when the lights are low - and it's time to go
That's when I need your love so bad
So why don't you give it up, baby
and bring it home to me
Or write it on a piece of paper, woman - so it can be read to me
Tell me that you love me - and stop drivin' me mad
Because I need your love so bad
Need a soft voice - just to talk to me at night
Don't want you to worry, baby
I know we can make everything alright
Listen to my plea, baby, come on bring it to me
cause I need - your love so bad
zum AnfangSweet Lady Genevieve (The Kinks)
Ein Mann möchte eine zweite Chance
Sweet Lady Genevieve
The Kinks
Once under a scarlet sky I told you never ending lies,
But they were the words of a drunken vagabond
Who knew very well he would break your heart before long
Oh forgive me Genevieve.
Now I've come back to see
sweet Lady Genevieve,
This time Ill give you some security
And I will make promises I can keep
So will you come back to me sweet Lady Genevieve.
Let me rock you, hold you,
Take you in my arms.
Forgive me, please,
Smile away all your sadness,
put your trust in me.
Oh if you come back to me sweet Lady Genevieve,
Im not the impetuous fool you used to know
I know that I used you and I hurt you so,
But that was so long ago sweet Lady Genevieve.
Oh, love me,
Take me in your arms.
Let me rock you, hold you,
Smile away all your sadness, put your trust in me.
Once under a starry sky I led you on and told you lies
Drank too much whiskey on that hot summer night.
I acted so slyly because you were acting so shy,
Oh forgive me Genevieve.
If you come back to me sweet Lady Genevieve,
You're not the child who smiled so innocently
And I'm not the rogue that I used to be,
So will you come back to me sweet Lady Genevieve.
Oh Genevieve, oh Genevieve.

God's Children (The Kinks)
God's Children
The Kinks
Man made the buildings that reach for the sky
And man made the motorcar and learned how to drive
But he didn't make the flowers and he didn't make the trees
And he didn't make you and he didn't make me
And he got no right to turn us into machines
He's got no right at all
'Cause we are all God's children
And he got no right to change us
Oh, we gotta go back the way the good lord made us all
Don't want this world to change me
I wanna go back the way
the good lord made me
Same lungs that he gave me
to breath with
Same eyes he gave me to see with
Oh, the rich man, the poor man, the saint and the sinner
The wise man, the simpleton, the loser and the winner
We are all the same to Him
Stripped of our clothes and all the things we own
The day that we are born
We are all God's children

zum AnfangFor No One (The Beatles)
Ein Song der Beatles über das Ende einer Liebe
For No One
The Beatles
Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you
She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
You want her, you need her
And yet you don't believe her when she says her love is dead
You think she needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone
She doesn't need him
Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be times when all the things she said will fill your head
You won't forget her
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
Komponiert von John Lennon & Paul Mc Cartney. Erschienen 1966 auf der LP "Revolver".
zum AnfangLola (The Kinks)
Porträt eines besonderen Mannes
Lola
The Kinks
I met her in a club down in old soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
Well I'm not the worlds most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola
Well I'm not dumb but I cant understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my Lola
Well we drank champagne
and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said dear boy wont you come home with me
Well I'm not the worlds
most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well
I almost fell for my Lola
I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me
Well that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
Its a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola
Well I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man
Well I'm not the worlds most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola

Lovely Rita (The Beatles)
Liebeslied an eine Verkehrspolizistin
Lovely Rita
The Beatles
Lovely rita meter maid.
Lovely rita meter maid.
Lovely rita meter maid.
Nothing can come between us,
When it gets dark i tow your heart away.
Standing by a parking meter,
When i caught a glimpse of rita,
Filling in a ticket in her little white book.
In a cap she looked much older,
And the bag across her shoulder
Made her look a little like a military man.
Lovely rita meter maid,
May i inquire discreetly,
When are you free,
To take some tea with me.
Took her out and tried to win her,
Had a laugh and over dinner,
Told her i would really like to see her again,
Got the bill and rita paid it,
Took her home i nearly made it,
Sitting on the sofa with a sister or two.
Oh, lovely rita meter maid,
Where would i be without you,
Give us a wink and make me think of you.

zum AnfangWalk on the Wild Side (Lou Reed)
Walk on the Wild Side
Lou Reed
Holly came from Miami FLA
Hitch-hiked her way across the USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her leg and then he was a she
She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
Candy came from out on the island
In the backroom she was everybodys darling
But she never lost her head
Even when she was given head
She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls go
Doo, doo, doo…
Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New york city is the place where they said
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said hey joe, take a walk on the wild side
Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the apollo
You should have seen him go go go
They said, hey sugar, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that dash
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls say
Doo, doo, doo…

zum AnfangMr. Pleasant (The Kinks)
Ein Loblied auf einen Erfolgsmenschen
Mr. Pleasant
The Kinks
Oh Mr Pleasant, how is Mrs Pleasant?
I hope the world is treating you right,
And your head's in the air,
And you're feeling so proud,
'Cause you're such a success,
And the whole wide world is on your side, hey hey.
How are you today?
People say Mr Pleasant is good,
Mr Pleasant is kind,
Mr Pleasant's okay,
Mr Pleasant don't mind.
As long as Mr Pleasant's all right, hey hey.
How are you today?
How's your father, how's your mother?
How's your sister, how's your brother?
How's your brand new limousine,
Twenty-four inch TV screen?
Did you like prosperity
More than you liked poverty?
Life is easier, so much easier,
Life is easier now.
Oh Mr Pleasant, how is Mrs Pleasant?
Did you know she was flirting around
With another young man,
And he's taking her out
When you have to work late?
And it's not so pleasant after all, hey hey.
How are you today?
People say Mr Pleasant is good,
Mr Pleasant is kind,
Mr Pleasant's okay,
Mr Pleasant don't mind.
As long as Mr Pleasant's all right, hey hey.
How are you today?
Mr Pleasant is good,
Mr Pleasant is kind,
Mr Pleasant's okay.

I go To Sleep (The Kinks)
Ein Song, der vom Verlassensein handelt
I go to Sleep
The Kinks
When I look up from my pillow
I dream you are there with me.
Though you are far away
I know you'll always be near to me.
I go to sleep, sleep, and imagine
that you're there with me.
I look around me and feel
you are ever so close to me.
Each tear that flows from my eyes brings back memories of you to me.
I go to sleep, sleep, and imagine
that you're there with me.
I was wrong, I will cry,
I will love you to the day I die.
You alone, you alone and no one else, you were meant for me.
When morning comes once more
I have the loneliness you left me.
Each day drags by until finally night time descends on me.
I go to sleep, sleep, and imagine that you're there with me.

Come Dancing (The Kinks)
Come Dancing
The Kinks
They put a parking lot on a piece of land
Where the supermarket used to stand.
Before that they put up a bowling alley
On the site that used to be the local palais.
Thats where the big bands used to come and play.
My sister went there on a saturday.
Come dancing,
All her boyfriends used to come and call.
Why not come dancing, its only natural?
Another saturday, another date.
She would be ready but shes always make them wait.
In the hallway, in anticipation,
He didnt know the night would end up in frustration.
He'd end up blowing all his wages for the week
All for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek.
Come dancing,
Thats how they did it when I was just a kid,
And when they said come dancing,
My sister always did.
My sister should have come in a midnight,
And my mum would always sit up and wait.
It always ended up in a big row
When my sister used to get home late.
Out of my window I can see them in the moonlight,
Two silhouettes saying goodnight by the garden gate.
The day they knocked down the palais
My sister stood and cried.
The day they knocked down the palais
Part of my childhood died, just died.
Now Im grown up and playing in a band,
And theres a car park where the palais used to stand.
My sisters married and she lives on an estate.
Her daughters go out, now its her turn to wait.
She knows they get away with things she never could,
But if I asked her I wonder if she would,
Come dancing,
Come on sister, have yourself a ball.
Dont be afraid to come dancing,
Its only natural.
Come dancing,
Just like the palais on a saturday.
And all her friends will come dancing
Where the big bands used to play

Don't Forget to Dance (The Kinks)
Don't Forget to Dance
The Kinks
You look out of your window,
Into the night.
Could be rain, could be snow,
But it can't feel as cold as what you're feeling inside.
And all of your friends are either married, vanished,
Or you're just left alone.
But that's no reason to stop living.
That's no excuse to give in to a sad and lonely heart.
Don't forget to dance,
Don't forget to smile.
Don't forget to dance,
Forget it for a while.
'Cause darling, darling,
I bet you danced a good one in your time.
And if this were a party
I'd really make sure the next one would be mine.
Yes, you with the broken heart.
Don't forget to dance,
Don't forget to smile.
Don't forget to dance,
Forget it for a while.
Don't forget to dance,
Forget it for a while.
You walk down the street
And all the young punks whistle at you.
A nice bit of old,
Just goes to show what you can achieve
With the right attitude.
As you pass them by
They whisper their remarks one to another,
And you give them the eye
Even that you know that you could be their mother.
You do the thing you love the best.
What separates you from the rest,
And what you love to do the most?
And when they ask me how you dance,
I say that you dance real close.
Don't forget to dance, no, no, no,
Don't forget to dance.

Dead End Street (The Kinks)
Dead End Street
The Kinks
There’s a crack up in the ceiling,
And the kitchen sink is leaking.
Out of work and got no money,
A sunday joint of bread and honey.
What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the
second floor.
No money coming in,
The rent collector's knocking,
trying to get in.
We are strictly second class,
We dont understand,
(dead end!)
Why we should be on dead end street.
(dead end!)
People are living on dead end street.
(dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.
Dead end street, yeah
Dead end street, yeah
On a cold and frosty morning,
Wipe my eyes and stop me yawning.
And my feet are nearly frozen,
Boil the tea and put some toast on.
What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the
second floor.
No chance to emigrate,
I’m deep in debt and it’s much too late.
We both want to work so hard,
We cant get the chance,
(dead end!)
People live on dead end street.
(dead end!)
People are dying on dead end street.
(dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.
Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)...

Dandy (The Kinks)
Dandy
The Kinks
Dandy, Dandy,
Where you gonna go now?
Who you gonna run to?
All your little life
You're chasing all the girls.
They can't resist your smile.
Oh, they long for Dandy, Dandy.
Checkin' out the ladies,
Tickling their fancy,
Pouring out your charm
To meet your own demands,
And turn it off at will.
Oh, they long for Dandy, Dandy.
Knockin' on the back door,
Climbing through the window,
Hubby's gone away,
And while the cat's away
The mice are gonna play.
Oh, you low down Dandy, Dandy.
Dandy
Dandy, you know you're moving much too fast,
And Dandy, you know you can't escape the past.
Look around you and see the people settle down,
And when you're old and grey you will remember what they said,
That two girls are too many, three's a crowd and four - you're dead.
Oh Dandy, Dandy,
When you gonna give up?
Are you feeling old now?
You always will be free,
You need no sympathy,
A bachelor you will stay,
And Dandy, you're all right.
You're all right.
You're all right.
You're all right.

Days (The Kinks)
Eine vergangene Liebe
Days
The Kinks
Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days
you gave me.
I'm thinking of the days
I won't forget a single day, believe me.
I bless the light,
I bless the light that lights on you
believe me.
And though you're gone,
You're with me every single day
believe me.
Days I'll remember all my life
Days when you can't see wrong from right.
You took my life
But then I knew that very soon
you'd leave me,
But it's all right,
Now I'm not frightened of this world
believe me.
I wish today could be tomorrow,
The night is dark,
It just brings sorrow anyway.
Thank you for the days,
Those endless days, those sacred days
you gave me.
I'm thinking of the days,
I won't forget a single day, believe me.

Neben den Beatles, den Rolling Stones und "The Who" waren die "Kinks" die vierte grosse britische Band der 60er-Jahre. You Can’t Always Get What You Want (The Rolling Stones)
You Can’t Always Get What You Want
The Rolling Stones
I saw her today at a reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you might find
You get what you need
And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't, we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you just might find
You get what you need
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man - did he look pretty ill
We decided that we’d have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and I said to him
You can't always get what you want, no!
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need.
I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need
zum AnfangThe Fool On The Hill (The Beatles)
The Fool On The Hill
The Beatles
Day after day,
Alone on the hill,
The man with the foolish grin
is keeping perfectly still,
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he's just a fool,
And he never gives an answer,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.
Well on the way, head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand voices
is talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him,
Or the sound he appears to make,
And he never seems to notice,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.
And nobody seems to like him
They can tell what he wants to do.
And he never shows his feelings,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.
He never listens to them,
He knows that they're the fool
They don't like him,
But the fool on the hill
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.

You've Got A Friend
Carole King
When you're down in troubles
And you need some love and care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you got to do is call
And I'll be there
Yes I will
You've got a friend
If the sky above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind begins to blow
Keep your head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at your door
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, but don't you let them
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

Summer in the City (The Lovin Spoonful)
Summer in the City
The Lovin Spoonful
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

I laid on a dune I looked at the sky
When the children were babies and played on the beach
You came up behind me, I saw you go by
You were always so close and still within reach.
Sara, Sara
Whatever made you want to change your mind
Sara, Sara
So easy to look at, so hard to define.
I can still see them playing with their pails in the sand
They run to the water their buckets to fill
I can still see the shells falling out of their hands
As they follow each other back up the hill.
Sara, Sara
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life
Sara, Sara
Radiant jewel, mystical wife.
Sleeping in the woods by a fire in the night
Drinking white rum in a Portugal bar
Them playing leapfrog and hearing about Snow White
You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.
Sara, Sara
It's all so clear, I could never forget
Sara, Sara
Loving you is the one thing I'll never regret.
I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells
I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through
Staying up for day in the Chelsea Hotel
Writing "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.
Sara, Sara
Wherever we travel we're never apart
Sara, Sara
Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.
How did I meet you ? I don't know
A messenger sent me in a tropical storm
You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow
And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.

Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress
Sara, Sara
You must forgive me my unworthiness.
Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore
You always responded when I needed your help
You gimme a map and a key to your door.

zum AnfangEvery Grain Of Sand (Bob Dylan)
Every Grain Of Sand
Bob Dylan
In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There's a dyin' voice within me reaching out somewhere,
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair.
Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake,
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break.
In the fury of the moment I can see the Master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand.
Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear,
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer.
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay.
I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name.
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand.
I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light,
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space,
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face.
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me.
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand.

You Know What You Could Be
The Incredible String Band
Read your book and lose yourself
In another's thoughts
He might tell you 'bout what is
Or even 'bout what is not
And if he's kind and gentle too,
And he loves the world a lot,
His twilight words
may melt the slush
Of what you have been taught
You know what you could be
Tell me my friend,
Why you worry all the time
What you should be
Listen to the song of life
Its rainbow's end won't hold you
Its crimson shapes and purple sounds,
Softly will enfold you
It gurgles through the timeless glade
In quartertones of lightning
No policy is up for sale,
In case the truth be frightening
You know what you could be
Tell me my friend,
Why you worry all the time
What you should be

You don't know what you're missing

North Country Girl
Pete Townshend
When you travel to the green hills of Ayr
Where the sea breaks windows on the border line.
Remember me to a girl who lives there,
For she once was a true love of mine.
North Country girl...
Please see for me that her red hair is long,
And flows and curls down her back and breast.
Please see for me that her red hair is long,
For that's the way I remember her the best.
See that she's warm when the summer ends
When the trees are bare and the rivers freeze
She washes clothes where the river bends
She's working on her knees.
See for me that her coat's pulled up close,
And her beret frames her sweet pretty face.
See that she's warm and drink her a toast
For I am exiled in a lonely place.
Please let me know if she remembers me at all,
A hundred times I've hoped and prayed
That way up there near the Roman wall
She didn't suffer when the fall-out sprayed.
North Country girl...

Most Of The Time
Bob Dylan
Most of the time
I'm clear focused all around,
Most of the time
I can keep both feet on the ground,
I can follow the path, I can read the signs,
Stay right with it, when the road unwinds,
I can handle whatever I stumble upon,
I don't even notice she's gone,
Most of the time.
Most of the time
It's well understood,
Most of the time
I wouldn't change it if I could,
I can't make it all match up, I can hold my own,
I can deal with the situation right down to the bone,
I can survive, I can endure
And I don't even think about her
Most of the time.
Most of the time
My head is on straight,
Most of the time
I'm strong enough not to hate.
I don't build up illusion 'till it makes me sick,
I ain't afraid of confusion no matter how thick
I can smile in the face of mankind.
Don't even remember what her lips felt like on mine
Most of the time.
Most of the time
She ain't even in my mind,
I wouldn't know her if I saw her
She's that far behind.
Most of the time
I can't even be sure
If she was ever with me
Or if I was with her.
Most of the time
I'm halfway content,
Most of the time
I know exactly where I went,
I don't cheat on myself, I don't run and hide,
Hide from the feelings, that are buried inside,
I don't compromised and I don't pretend,
I don't even care if I ever see her again
Most of the time.

Julia
The Beatles
Half of what I say is meaningless
But I say it just to reach you, Julia
Julia, Julia, oceanchild, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Julia, seashell eyes, windy smile, calls me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
Her hair of floating sky is shimmering
glimmering
In the sun
Julia, Julia, morning moon, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
When I cannot sing my heart
I can only speak my mind, Julia
Julia, sleeping sand, silent cloud, touch me
So I sing a song of love, Julia
So I sing a song of love for Julia, Julia, Julia

The Rolling Stones
If I was the sun way up there
I'd go with my love everywhere
I'll be the moon when the sun go down
To let you know I'm still around
That's how strong my love is, baby
That's how strong my love is
I'll be the weeping willow drowning in my tears
You can go swimming when you're here
I'll be the rainbow when the sun is gone
Wrap you in my colors and keep you warm
That's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is
I'll be the ocean so deep and wide
I'll dry the tears when you cry
I'll be the breeze when the storm is gone
To dry your eyes and keep you warm
That's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is
Baby that's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is
That's how strong my love is, baby
That's how strong my love is
Das auf der LP "Out of our heads" (1965) erschienene Lied stammt nicht - wie die späteren Songs der Rolling Stones - von Mick Jagger & Keith Richard, sondern vom schwarzen US-Songwriter Roosevelt Jamison.

Let It Be
The Beatles
When I find myself in times of trouble,
mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the broken hearted people
living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted
there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the night is cloudy,
there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music,
mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

Who killed Davey Moore
Bob Dylan
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not I," says the referee,
"Don't point your finger at me.
I could've stopped it in the eighth
An' maybe kept him from his fate,
But the crowd would've booed, I'm sure,
At not gettin' their money's worth.
It's too bad he had to go,
But there was a pressure on me too, you know.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."
Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not us," says the angry crowd,
Whose screams filled the arena loud.
"It's too bad he died that night
But we just like to see a fight.
We didn't mean for him t' meet his death,
We just meant to see some sweat,
There ain't nothing wrong in that.
It wasn't us that made him fall.
No, you can't blame us at all."
Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not me," says his manager,
Puffing on a big cigar.
"It's hard to say, it's hard to tell,
I always thought that he was well.
It's too bad for his wife an' kids he's dead,
But if he was sick, he should've said.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."
Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not me," says the gambling man,
With his ticket stub still in his hand.
"It wasn't me that knocked him down,
My hands never touched him none.
I didn't commit no ugly sin,
Anyway, I put money on him to win.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."
Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not me," says the boxing writer,
Pounding print on his old typewriter,
Sayin', "Boxing ain't to blame,
There's just as much danger in a football game."
Sayin', "Fist fighting is here to stay,
It's just the old American way.
It wasn't me that made him fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."
Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not me," says the man whose fists
Laid him low in a cloud of mist,
Who came here from Cuba's door
Where boxing ain't allowed no more.
"I hit him, yes, it's true,
But that's what I am paid to do.
Don't say 'murder,' don't say 'kill.'
It was destiny, it was God's will."
Who killed Davey Moore,
Why an' what's the reason for?

Blowin' In The Wind (Bob Dylan)
Blowin' In The Wind
Bob Dylan
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Ein Weihnachtslied
Three Angels
Bob Dylan
Three angels up above the street
Each one playing a horn
Dressed in green robes with wings that stick out
They've been there since Christmas morn
The wildest cat from Montana passes by in a flash
Then a lady in a bright orange dress
One U-Haul trailer, a truck with no wheels
The Tenth Avenue bus going west
The dogs and pigeons fly up and they flutter around
A man with a badge skips by
Three fellows crawlin' on their way back to work
Nobody stops to ask why
The bakery truck stops outside of that fence
Where the angels stand high on their poles
The driver peeks out, trying to find one face
In this concrete world full of souls
The angels play on their horns all day
The whole earth in progression seems to pass by
But does anyone hear the music they play
Does anyone even try?
